Apart from the benefits to others and it feeling good, Volunteering just one day a month will help you experience a lasting boost in “eudemonic” well-being, or feelings that your life has purpose, one recent study reveals.

Volunteering makes you feel good about yourself, and helps you form new relationships with the people in your community, explains study author Joonmo Son, PhD, a sociologist at the National University of Singapore.

Another study showed that people age 55 and older who did volunteer work had a 44% lower risk of dying over 5 years than those who were less involved.
